The Adopt-a-thon, typically held in November or December is a live-telathon, held at WLKY. Anchorwoman Liz Everman hosts the show, along with other WLKY personalities, and the stories of children available for adoption are shared. The teleathon is the primary means of fundraising for the Wednesday’s Child organization and utilizes local celebrities working the phones. Large donations are presented on air, and several of the children are interviewed on air as well.
Historically held in January at UofL’s Shelby campus, the Adoption Fair brings together at a resource fair the local adoption agencies and facilities and families looking to expand by adoption. Agencies participate by exhibiting at a low-cost booth. Several adoption workshops are offered delineating the steps and process for adoption. This free-to-attend event is promoted to the public through a variety of means, including paid advertising and public relations.
Funds raised by private and corporate donations are used to purchase holiday gifts for Wednesday’s Child kiddos, using volunteers as the shopping and wrapping elves. The children receive their gifts at a special holiday party, typically held at a roller skating rink, along with Santa himself, and a pizza party.
Kentucky Kingdom Family Fun Day
Typically held on an annual Sunday in July or August, adopted children and their families are invited for a fun-filled family day, hosted by Wednesday’s Child at a steep discount. Participants receive food and often some type of spirit wear, such as a Wednesday’s Child t-shirt.
Shining Star Gallery
The Shining Star Photo Gallery is a traveling awareness-raising photo wall, featuring beautiful portraits of children waiting to be adopted and their ongoing journey to find a “forever family.” Companies and organizations borrow this gallery and use one of several custom configurations to fit their own space needs for a designated period of time. Each portrait is accompanied by a descriptive bio rack card for booth visitors to take, review and keep. The Shining Star Gallery is reprinted every few years and new children are introduced into the gallery and featured at a launch reception.

Wednesday’s Child has historically participated in the Kentucky State Fair in August with an outreach booth. The organization partners with the State staff for the Special Needs Adoption Program for staffing the booth. We collect names of families interested in adopting and distribute literature about the adoption process.
